When is it worth going for a screening?

In Hungary only, malignant breast cancer is the second most common cause of death among cancer patients: more than 2,000 women die each year, and nearly 9,000 new cases are diagnosed.

"LEARN MORE, TAKE ACTION"
This series aims to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention, early detection, and the steps we can all take to reduce risk. By providing clear, actionable information on screenings, self-examinations, and lifestyle choices, we hope to empower women to take control of their health. Early detection saves lives, and through this initiative, we aim to dispel myths and encourage timely action for better outcomes.

Breast cancer screening is one of the most important preventive steps for early detection of breast cancer, as cancers detected in the early stages are much more treatable. The frequency of screening depends on age, and it is particularly important for everyone to know what signs to look out for.

Screening recommendations by age:

20-30 years:

During this time, self-exams and medical check-ups are recommended. Regular self-examinations, ideally performed once a month, can help you detect any abnormalities in time.

From age 40:

At this age, it is recommended to have a mammogram every two years. This is a quick and painless method capable of detecting even the smallest changes.

From age 50:

Regular mammograms are recommended annually, as the risk increases with age.

What signs should you watch for?

  • A lump or hard area in the breast or armpit
  • Changes in the shape or size of the breast
  • Skin changes, such as redness or dimpling
  • Pain or tenderness in the breast
  • Nipple discharge

If you notice any unusual symptoms, it is important to see a doctor immediately. Regular screening is key to early detection and can save lives.

These recommendations are based on international guidelines from organizations such as the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the European Union, as well as Hungarian protocols for breast cancer screening

Why is breast cancer screening important? Facts and myths

There are many misunderstandings and myths in the public consciousness about breast cancer screening, which can discourage participation in screenings. It is important to clarify these, as screening is one of the most effective tools for the early detection of breast cancer.

How does self-examination help in the early detection of breast cancer?

Self-examination plays a crucial role in the early detection of breast cancer, as it is one of the quickest and easiest ways to notice any unusual changes in the breast. Although self-examination does not replace medical screenings, it serves as an important complementary tool for early detection.

What can we do to reduce the risk of breast cancer?

Before thinking that simply leading a healthy lifestyle, exercising, and following a balanced diet can completely prevent cancer, we must inform everyone that this is not entirely the case. However, it’s correct to say that a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits can contribute to the development of breast cancer. Still, by making a few simple lifestyle changes, we can reduce the risks.
